AUSA Chapter Supports US Army War College 2015 Landpower Conference

The U.S. Army War College conducted an important conference on “American Use of Strategic Landpower since 9/11” at the US Army Heritage and Education Center (AHEC) over three days from December 2-4, 2015 with support from the Carlisle Barracks & Cumberland Valley Chapter of the Association of the United States Army (AUSA).

The keynote address was presented by LTG(Ret) Daniel P. Bolger, who spoke on the topic "Why We Lost" - a discussion of his book concerning US efforts in the more recent conflict in Iraq.

In the decade following America’s involvement in the War in Vietnam, Colonel Harry Summers, a researcher in the War College’s Strategic Studies Institute, analyzed the Army’s performance in that conflict. His “On Strategy: The Vietnam War in Context” (1982) was a controversial landmark study of the use of military force, particularly landpower.  In the spirit of Summers’ “On Strategy,” the War College panelists from all over the country examined the American use of landpower since the terror attacks of September 11, 2001 through multiple strategic perspectives sometimes with historical comparisons.  The panelists included several members of the local AUSA chapter.  For example, chapter board member LTC Jim Di Crocco presented a paper entitled, “Reading Manila, Thinking Wiesbaden: Current Strategic Parallels to pre-World War II Army Unpreparedness.”
